Sexuality-based Stigma and Inclusion Among Southern Protestant Religious Leaders

Abstract Introduction Sexuality-based stigma is prevalent in the USA and is, part, based on religious gender norms. In South—compared to other regions—religiosity more salient, norms are conservative, sexual reproductive health (SRH) inequities prevalent. Methods Guided by a stakeholder Advisory Committee, researchers conducted 20 in-depth interviews with Protestant leaders Georgia from 2018 2019 explore how faith describe sexuality-based stigma, including toward abortion minorities. Interviews were transcribed thematically analyzed using team-based, iterative coding. Results Religious held wide range of sexuality attitudes Some described traditional judgment around “ sins ” abortion, homosexuality ,” and/or transgender people Scripture constructs cisgender binary purity. But noted tension between that Christian ideologies love all [ being ] welcomed …[ no matter who you .” Several participants provided counter-examples for building supportive empathic norms—including LGBTQ inclusivity—through de-stigmatizing testimony personal relationships. Conclusions There linkages against sexual/gender minorities among Southern leaders. However, there also support inclusivity. We assert assets-based engagement critical effective, inclusive faith-based SRH programming. Policy Implications These findings demonstrate need national, state, local policies protect comprehensive sex education, access, people.
